Press Review

"‘It was a wonderful and moving experience to hear, the day before yesterday at the Muse, the “Concerto della Memoria” organised by the Amici della Musica di Ancona in collaboration with the Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana, the intense melologue for four narrators and orchestra ‘Vivi, vivi per sempre’, based on the novel ‘Life and Fate’ by the Russian writer and journalist Vasily Grossman and skilfully reinterpreted and adapted for the staged reading by Guido Barbieri. The musical counterpoint, the result of a joint commission (Amici della Musica and Form) to the composer Luigi Sammarchi, was entrusted to the Marche Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jacopo Rivani, ready to respond with precision to the sharp, straining instrumental outbursts, the sounds bursting forth in a crescendo of drama, the sudden percussion, the tense vibrations in the background of the vigorous score.”"

"“The concert features a commissioned work by the Amici della Musica and Form: "Vivi, vivi per sempre", a melologue for four female narrators and orchestra commissioned from the composer Luigi Sammarchi, with the concept and adaptation of the text by Guido Barbieri, based on the novel "Life and Fate" by Vasily Grossman, specifically on a letter from a mother imprisoned in the Moscow ghetto to her son.”"

Fragments & Electronics – The Poetry of Sammarchi

A portrait of the Bolognese composer Luigi Sammarchi: his musical education, shaped by both the classical tradition and the avant-garde movements of the 20th century; his affinity for electronic music and the use of the ‘fragment’ as an expressive core; and an analysis of some of the most emblematic works in his catalogue.

"“The programme features a commission from the festival for Luigi Sammarchi, a Bolognese composer of the 1960s generation, who presents the world premiere of *Dolce mi è sembrato il mio destino fuggitivo* (*My fleeting destiny seemed sweet to me*), for voice (Sonia Visentin) and live electronics (Alvise Vidolin), set to texts by Dino Campana and Pindar. These are polyphonic layers which, through the use of eight loudspeakers in the hall, project the sound lines into a perspectival dimension, in a dialogue of refractions that makes sound seem like light.”"

"“At the Teatro La Fenice, prior to the concert conducted by Alessandro De Marchi, in the presence of Superintendent Cristiano Chiarot and Artistic Director Fortunato Ortombina, Marina Gelmi di Caporiacco, a member of the ‘Fondazione Amici della Fenice’ Marina Gelmi di Caporiacco presented a cheque to composer Luigi Sammarchi for his new score ‘E sì come s’io bevesse al fondo lethe’, as part of the ‘Nuova musica alla Fenice’ project, dedicated this year to the memory of Giovanni Morelli.”"

"“The opening piece was a commission for Luigi Sammarchi, a composer from Bologna who has already made a name for himself on more than one occasion in Venice. Sammarchi presented ‘E sì come s’io bevesse al Fondo Lethe…’, a title inspired by an eleven-syllable verse by Pico della Mirandola, a piece for strings characterised by ethereal and rarefied sounds, often played at the bridge, soft dissonances, very high harmonics, percussive pizzicatos from the double basses, and short, plaintive phrases. A captivating meditation with intimate tones, dedicated to the memory of Giovanni Morelli.”"

"“As part of the ‘Nuova Musica alla Fenice’ project, Luigi Sammarchi presents one of his unpublished pieces, ‘E sì com’io bevesse al fondo Lethe’. The title is a quotation from an eleven-syllable line by Pico della Mirandola. For some time now, I have been working on the theme of memory, and on the mental and philosophical implications that arise between memory and oblivion. I have sought to apply these philosophical speculations to musical structures. And given that Giovanni Morelli wrote an extraordinary essay precisely on memory and oblivion, it seemed fitting, almost natural, to dedicate this piece to him. Usually, in my creative process, I try to extrapolate the compositional form from the poetic quotation.”"

"“Through the imaginative integration of Alvise Vidolin’s live electronics, he delivered an exemplary programme, bringing sound and drama to Luigi Sammarchi’s ambitious and powerful *Alle tacenti stelle* and to the post-futurist *Per la meccanica dei flauti* by Agostino Di Scipio.”"

"«Take Luigi Sammarchi’s piece, for example. Absolutely captivating. A world premiere. At first, the soft, breathy sounds of the instrument in *Alle tacenti stelle – Ipazia*. When Lotti’s voice enters, in whispers, it is incredibly erotic. We witness a true (non-platonic) musical rendezvous. Later on, the flute music becomes ultra-free, and the electronics drift alongside, fluid and spatial. Then, lyricism without nostalgia.”"
