Biography

Luigi Sammarchi (Bologna, 1962) is a composer of contemporary music. 
He graduated in Piano at the "G.B. Martini" Conservatory in Bologna with Lidia Proietti (1994) and in Composition with Adriano Guarnieri (2004). He obtained a Level II Academic Diploma in Composition and New Technologies at the "B. Marcello" Conservatory in Venice with Alvise Vidolin (2008). 
He attended a two-year course in composition with live electronics with Vidolin and Guarnieri, a course on the interpretation of Luigi Nono's works at the Cini Foundation in Venice, and a masterclass in composition with Helmut Lachenmann at the Conservatory of Parma (2006).

In 2004, he won the 27th Valentino Bucchi International Composition Competition with Polyphonia IV for four orchestral groups. 
In 2012, he distinguished himself at the International Festival of Contemporary Music of the Venice Biennale with Alle tacenti stelle – Ipazia, àchranton àstron for flute/voice and live electronics, a work noted in reviews by Angelo Foletto, Mario Messinis and Mario Gamba. 

He has received commissions from the Teatro La Fenice in Venice (composition for orchestra E sì com'io bevesse al fondo Lethe... in the 2013-2014 Symphony Season, 'Nuova Musica alla Fenice' project; compositions for the Bruno Maderna celebrations; piece for the festival "Lo spirito della musica di Venezia"),  from the Bologna Festival (2017 commission for the project "Stockhausen, dieci anni dopo";  chamber work In alloro mutò il suo pianto. Il canto di Dafne sulle spoglie di Orfeo, 2021, with the support of Bologna City of Music UNESCO),  by the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the University of Bologna  and the AngelicA Festival.

His musical language is characterised by the structural use of live electronics, the dialogue between early music and contemporary writing,  and a referential universe that draws on classical mythology and literature. 
She collaborates regularly with Alvise Vidolin for sound direction, with flutist Roberto Fabbriciani and with the Ex Novo Ensemble.  
Performers of her works include sopranos Barbara Zanichelli, Pamela Lucciarini, Livia Rado and Sonia Visentin, baritone Roberto Abbondanza and pianist Aldo Orvieto.

His music has been performed at the Venice Biennale, the Teatro La Fenice, the Bologna Festival, the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, the Festival delle Nazioni in Sansepolcro, the AngelicA Festival, Musica/Realtà, the Giornate Gesualdiane Internazionali, and in Chinese venues including Zhengzhou University and Henan University in Kaifeng. 
Numerous compositions have been broadcast by RAI Radio 3.

He teaches Harmony and Analysis at the "Agostino Steffani" Conservatory in Castelfranco Veneto.
